Welcome

Welcome to 2nd semester. We have covered a lot of ground and have a lot more to do. I am very pleased with the progress the students made during first semester. I want you to know that all their hard work will serve them well this semester as we undertake the study of physical science.

Our first topic is chemistry. As always, it is important that they know their vocabulary words so they can learn the concepts as they are presented in class. Having an understanding of the vocabulary really gives them an advantage as they come to class and we discuss different topics. I would like for them to show understanding of the word instead of just being able to give me the book definition. It is also very important that students spend some time each evening studying their notes and vocabulary. They do not have to spend more than a few minutes -- whatever it takes for them to go over the material, but the consistency is important.

If you have any questions for me, you can reach me through the school email or I have given all my students my phone number. Do not hesitate to call me. If you do not reach me, just leave a message and I will return your call.

SCIENCE NINE-WEEK TESTChapters E-3 E-4 and D-1

For all chapters, know all the vocabulary!

Go through the chapters and re-familiarize yourself with the diagrams and charts. You DO NOT have to memorize them. You just need to be reminded of the concepts they show. Study all your notes for each chapter. Go through the Chapter Reviews as good checks of your understanding.

I would suggest that you start tonight if you haven’t already.

Monday- Study Chapter D-1. This should be a study session like you are preparing for the test as if it were tomorrow. This is the most familiar material because we have just done this chapter but you have not been tested on it at all. Remember there is a vocabulary quiz on this chapter tomorrow.

Tuesday- Study Chapter E3.Vocabulary, notes, book.....write down anything you think you would like me to go over with you in class. Go through the chapter review to find out what things you need more work on.

Wednesday- Review Chapter E-3 then study Chapter E-4 following the steps above.

Thursday - Saturday- Just review one chapter per night. Spend time making sure you understand the concepts and the vocabulary. These do not have to be very long sessions if you have been studying all along. By now ith should be a matter of keeping the material fresh.

Sunday- You are almost there! And prepared!!! Review, relax and come to class tomorrow confident!!

REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR TEXTBOOK WITH YOU.

THE SCIENCE TEST HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEDNESDAY. THERE WILL NOT BE A TEST TOMORROW.
Please study and be ready for a Vocabulary Quiz on Monday and a Chapter E4 test Wednesday.

Friday, April 8, 2011

We have finished our lesson on "Sound" so we will have a Lesson 2 quiz on MONDAY. We have one more lesson in this chapter and will be ready for a CHAPTER TEST on FRIDAY. This is such a busy time of year for all of us so the best thing you can do to help your student is to encourage them to study a little each night.

My Bible class will have a Lesson 27 Quiz on Wednesday of next week. Have a great weekend.

Thursday, March 24, 2011

As most of you know, there was a science test scheduled for today. I decided that the students and I needed another day to make sure that they were ready for the test so today we reviewed the material and tomorrow we will take the test.

For those in my Bible class, we will have a Fact Test tomorrow on Lessons 20-24. Tuesday of next week we will have a Memory Test on the verses for Lessons 20-23.

As we look forward to Spring Break, I want you to know that there will be a vocabulary quiz tomorrow and then on Friday we will work with magnets and electricity. I hoped to get to the test before the break, but did not feel comfortable with trying to force that issue. They really weren't going to be ready. We will pick up after Spring Break and will have a test shortly after our return to school.

I pray each and every one of you have a Great Spring Break.!

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

There will be a quiz on Lesson 1 (pg. E76-E81) tomorrow. Please make sure that your child is studying according to the "How to Study for a Science Test" sheet that I gave them at the beginning of the year. I know that some of them have begun to just study the notes and then cannot understand why they were not prepared. They must study the vocabulary, the notes, the review questions, and the material in the textbook.

I have not done a very good job of keeping this blog up to date. Please forgive me and I promise I will make an effort to update very often from now until the end of the year.

We have just finished our unit on Chemistry and are now beginning a new Chapter (E3) where "Energy" will be our topic. This is a chapter that provides us with the opportunity for some fun activities. We will work with magnets as well as electric circuits. Check back so you can see some of the exciting things we will be doing.

This is the time of year when keeping students focused can be a challenge. They are letting me know how busy they are with various spring-time activities so I would like to encourage everyone to make time to study for a little while daily. The students who have been conscientious about this have consistently done well on quizzes and tests. The ones who have not are beginning to struggle.

For those who were not in my class today, we did the vocabulary for Chapter E3. The list of words is on page E72. Please be sure to get your definitions from the glossary instead of in the text of the chapter. This will be homework next week if not done by then.

The 9 -week grading period ends next Friday, March 4th. We will have a quiz on the first lesson of the new chapter next week. I believe it will be on Thursday.

Enjoy the great weather! Ms. Kay
